U.S. EPA has published the number of small refinery exemption petitions and the number approved and pending by year on its website. In 2017, EPA received 34 petitions, granted 29 and still has 5 more pending (meaning 100 percent of them could be approved). The data shows a similar picture for 2016. EPA received 20 petitions, granted 19 and 1 more is pending. Years before that, EPA denied petitions. So far in 2018, EPA has received 11 petitions – all are pending.
This information on small refinery exemptions was included as part of an update EPA made to its Renewable Fuel Standard website. Other information EPA included are the weekly average price of RINs and the weekly volume of RINs traded. Weekly averages will be updated monthly, according to the website.
